David Bellamy Opens Environment Centre

Categories: School Events

Opening CeremonyWe are delighted that, On Monday 1st December, Professor David Bellamy OBE officially opened the New Environmental and Global Research Centre at the College. He was joined by Yvonne Baker, Chief Executive of STEMNET, an organisation that seeks to encourage the adoption of science, technology, engineering and maths study in the UK.

Eco TerminalsThe Centre will be used as a teaching room for students with integrated resources that demonstrate the advantages of sustainable living. These include rainwater harvesting facilities, solar water heating and a wind turbine powered PC. Students will be encouraged to investigate, calculate, and debate the advantages and disadvantages of sustainable developments locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. It is important that we don’t just teach young people about environmental matters, but that they understand how they can apply what they learn to the real world, and that is what we would like to achieve with this new centre.

Energy Monitors

At the opening event Students belonging to the Energy Monitoring Club showed business and school guests how they were monitoring electricity use in the whole school, and how this was encouraging everyone to turn off unused lights, computers and sockets. Then they could also calculate their carbon and financial savings.

This is a fantastic resource and I have great pleasure in declaring it officially open.”
