Physical Education

Physical EducationThe Physical Education programme at Swavesey Village College contributes to the overall education of all its students, by helping them to lead full and valuable lives through engaging in purposeful physical activity. For each individual we aim to:-

  • Develop their physical competence and to promote their physical development
  • Teach them, through experience, to know about and value the benefits of participation in physical activity while at school and throughout life
  • Develop within them an appreciation of skilful and creative performances across the areas of activity

The Department also plays an integral role in the development of cross curricular themes and aims to promote:-

  • Health education
  • The development of problem-solving skills
  • The student's self-esteem through the development of physical confidence
  • Promote the development of inter-personal skills

Curriculum

Key Stage 3

Students receive 2 x 60 minute lessons per week in each of Years 7, 8 and 9. Lessons are single sex with boys and girls covering the same activities. During these years they experience a broad and balanced programme in the National Curriculum areas:-

  • Athletics - athletics and health related fitness
  • Dance
  • Games basketball, hockey, netball, football, badminton, tennis, cricket and rounders.
  • Gymnastics - gymnastics and trampolining

Key Stage 4

Core Physical Education

All students receive 1 x 60 minute lesson each week. At the end of Year 9 students choose their activities, with guidance and help from staff, in preparation for Year 10. Four activities are selected by each individual which are repeated in Year 11. This selection procedure allows the individual to concentrate upon activities they most enjoy and wish to develop further.

GCSE Physical Education

The Department operates an examination course leading to the award of a Full Course GCSE certificate, following the Edexcel syllabus. This course attracts students from across the whole ability range and is part of an options programme available to students in Year 10. Students have additional lessons per week involving both practical and written work.

GCSE Dance

An optional course leading to the award of a Full GCSE in year 11. Students have additional lessons per week involving both written and practical.

Extra Curricular Policy

The Physical Education Department is actively involved in providing extra curricular activities in several ways.

Open Access Clubs

A variety of activities are offered throughout the year taking place between 3.15 and 4.15 which are open to students of all abilities e.g. trampoline, badminton.

Inter-House Sport

Competitions are organised throughout the year in a variety of games which are played by both girls and boys. Each year group has separate boys and girl’s events in hockey, football, netball, basketball, badminton and cricket. These competitions take place during lesson time culminating with a whole school Sports Day in July.

School Teams

Throughout the year the Department organises teams to compete against local schools in friendly, league and cup matches. The school plays an active role within the Cambridge and District School Sports Association.

Teams compete in the following sports

  • Hockey (boys/girls)
  • Basketball (boys/girls)
  • Soccer (boys/girls)
  • Netball (girls)
  • Cricket (boys/girls)
  • Trampoline (boys/girls)

Practice night for teams vary and are between 3.15 and 4.15 pm and fixtures night is usually Wednesday. For practice night and home games students are expected to organise their own transport home. For away fixtures students are returned to Swavesey.

The Most Able

Students possessing outstanding ability are nominated for District/County Trials and/or are encouraged to attend local clubs.
