Year 10
Year 10 offers a wide range of language options. Our Dual linguists can continue with both German and French, some student will continue with just French or German and all students have the option to start Spanish. In year 10 students learn more about describing themselves, their family and hobbies. This work is often followed up with written coursework on "My favourite hobby" They acquire more vocabulary to talk about what they eat and do every day, which may lead to written coursework on "Am I fit and healthy?".
The topic of school and future career is backed up only with speaking test preparation, which also happens with each topic as it is discussed in class. During the Autumn term there is an opportunity for the students to go to the Europa centre in Harlow for a series of simulated role plays, as if they were in the foreign country. This experience shapes the teaching in the whole of that term. There is always an exam in the Spring term, similar to earlier GCSE exams in type but not necessarily as demanding.
There are often smaller vocabulary tests throughout the year as well as some practice in past papers in the 5 lessons every fortnight. During class grammatical topics are dealt with in more depth, including verb tenses and the use of prepositions and cases. We have an Exchange every year, one year going to Bad Urach, Germany and the next to Langeais, France. The German Exchange trip for Year 10 culminates in the Summer term when the group from Bad Urach return to visit us.
Homework Policy - students are given one learning piece and one written piece each week. The focus of the written piece is often geared towards coursework and the Oral examination.
