Year 11

GCSE MFL 2009 -2011

The MFL examination is made up of the following:

1)         Speaking                                                                    30%

This is assessed by your class teacher. Your teacher will tell you when you will do your assessments during your two years of study. You will need to carry out two of the following activities which should last 4 – 6 minutes each. There are 30 marks available per task, making a total of 60 marks. Students will complete two untiered Controlled Assessments Tasks. Both tasks will be in the form of a dialogue or interview. Students must not submit the same task for Speaking and Writing.

2)         Writing                                                                       30%

This is assessed by the examination board, AQA. You will carry out two pieces of writing in controlled conditions which is then sent off to the examination board for marking. This could take the form of an article for a magazine, a web page, a blog or a letter. You will have up to 6 hours during class time in which to prepare for this assessment and an hour to write it in full.

All questions will have English language titles and explanations.

The Higher Tier papers will have “crossover” questions from the Foundation Tier paper.

3)         Reading and Understanding                                    20%

This takes the form of an exam paper sat in June 2011. You can take either Foundation or Higher Tier Papers. You will need to answer questions about short texts on different topics, for example text messages, advertisements and emails.

4)         Listening and Understanding                                  20%

This takes the form of an exam paper sat in June 2011. You can take either Foundation or Higher Tier Papers. You will need to answer questions on recorded material from different topic areas. Some material will be formal (e.g. a telephone message) and some informal (e.g. a conversation between friends)

Foundation Tier Papers = G – C (200-350 words for both tasks)

Higher Tier Papers = C – A* (400-600 words for both tasks)

As in any language examination it is extremely important that you learn vocabulary on a regular basis; the minimum core vocabulary lists are in the specification. All assessment tasks in Listening and Reading targeted at grades G-C will be based on this vocabulary list.
